Founded with a vision rooted in social responsibility and collective growth, Youth Welfare Matriculation Higher Secondary School (YWMS) stands as a shining example of what committed youth and a dedicated community can achieve. The school is not merely an academic institution—it is the embodiment of a movement that began in 1984, with a group of inspired young individuals who came together under the banner of “Ilaignar Narpani Mandram” (Youth Welfare Forum).
During the early 1980s, public infrastructure in rural areas like Govindagudi was significantly underdeveloped. Basic amenities such as street lighting and proper roads were scarce. Recognizing this, the Youth Welfare Forum mobilized local support to bring about change—without waiting for governmental aid. Through public contributions, they took up community development initiatives and transformed the village into a model of self-sufficiency.
Realizing that education is the cornerstone of sustainable progress, the Forum turned its focus to academics. With the firm belief that “only meaningful education can shape a strong future generation,” the organization laid the foundation for what would become a thriving educational institution.
In 1987, inspired by the visit of former President of India Dr. Zakir Husain to the village mosque inauguration years earlier, the Forum, with the generous support of Alhaj E.S.M. Bakker Mohamed, established the Dr. Zakir Husain English School. It began humbly with just 26 students in LKG and UKG.
Over time, through the support of the Govindagudi Educational Trust, the school grew both in size and reputation. It was later renamed as Youth Welfare Matriculation School, and eventually elevated to Youth Welfare Matriculation Higher Secondary School (YWMS).
